Jay A. Smith is a co-founding member of Flink Smith, after having spent five years working on an “of counsel” basis with Edward Flink and Associates, while he also maintained his own active litigation, business and real estate practice.  Jay and Ed first became acquainted in the late 1980’s while Jay was associated with an established general practice and insurance defense firm, having the privilege to be trained by and work closely with several well-respected members of the Capital District bar.  Jay’s and Ed’s friendship and mutual respect continued when Jay worked as house counsel for Continental Insurance Company, where he was allowed to develop his own personal practice which he greatly enjoyed.

Jay graduated from Tufts University in 1982, and received his law degree in 1985 from Albany Law School of Union University.  Jay was captain of the Albany Law School Rugby Football Club.  He was admitted to the New York State Courts and the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New York in 1986.

When Jay and Ed first teamed up in 1995, they agreed that Jay would eventually run the firm’s real estate practice, both of them having handled numerous real estate transactions for sellers, buyers, title insurers and lenders while working on personal injury cases for insurance carriers, the insureds and their own personal clients.  Flink Smith’s real estate operation has grown dramatically since that time, and continues to thrive under Jay’s leadership.  In addition to running the firm’s Real Estate practice, Jay also heads up the Business and Corporate Law practice groups.  Further, as a seasoned trial lawyer, Jay continues successfully to represent clients, in and out of court, in actions involving personal injury, products liability, insurance coverage and business disputes.

Jay is a member of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law and Real Estate Sections of the New York State Bar Association and has lectured for the New York State Bar Association.  Jay also volunteers for several school and community-based groups in the Town of Bethlehem where Jay resides with his wife, Jodie, and their three school aged daughters, Emily, Chandler and Amy.  Jay particularly enjoys coaching his daughters’ sports teams, having played on the football and baseball teams, and captained the hockey team while at Tufts.
