Ed Flink and Jay Smith began practicing law together in 1995, and have been steadily building the firm since their early morning meetings over coffee that led them to “team up” at that time. Although Jay became a lawyer almost 10 years after Ed graduated from law school, they had similar training, shared values as regards the practice, and dedication to their clients and the highest ethical standards.

At that time, Ed was in the process of dissolving a successful partnership of 12 years, with a former law school chum, after six years with a major upstate New York firm, and Jay had made the decision to open his own firm after almost 10 years of practice with an old line Capital District firm and a house counsel operation. Both Jay and Ed had an understanding of and contacts in the Insurance Industry and had learned how to litigate from the best, but both also knew that the primary goal of all clients is the resolution, not the continuation of their case. Ed and Jay shared the belief in the need to contain the client’s legal expense without compromising the client’s interests. We seek to attain those goals through, among other things, the prompt assessment of the case, the early identification of realistically achievable outcomes, and the development and pursuit of a streamlined strategy designed to achieve the desired outcome most efficiently and effectively, without wasted or, worse yet, counter-productive energy. This is what good lawyers always have done.
The mission was simple: build a general practice firm with an emphasis on litigation and real estate that achieved excellent results and provided the clients with unparalleled service. They started as Edward Flink & Associates, and experienced the steady, controlled growth that allowed them the time to impart to the other attorneys in the office the values and approaches they had learned. After four years, on January 1, 2000, Jay and Ed formed a new firm, Flink Smith & Associates, LLC.

The firm is characterized by the long term relationships it has had with the attorneys and support staff that comprise Flink Smith LLC, as the firm became known in 2004, the name change reflecting the growth of the firm. Jennifer Dominelli Lecakes, a member of the firm, has been with Ed and Jay for over 10 years, since she clerked for the firm while in law school; and Robert Coughlin, also a member of the firm, has been a professional colleague of both Ed and Jay for more than 20 years, Rob and Ed serving together on several committees of the New York State Bar Association and its Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section. Many of the other attorneys in the firm also have long term relationships with Flink Smith and its principals, as well as the excellent credentials and long history of service which characterize our firm. Even support staff stay with the firm for years, typically only leaving for other types of employment or reasons of geography, not to work for other firms.
In 2000, Flink Smith was one of the first Capital District law firms to open a Saratoga Springs office. In 2004, we opened an office in Lake Placid, in the heart of the Adirondacks, bringing in two esteemed North Country lawyers on an “of counsel” basis, Favor R. Smith and Charles E. Walsh. The formula remains the same: excellent results and unparalleled service. Throughout the entire time, we have built our practice entirely on referrals from clients and other attorneys, and word of mouth. We do not believe in advertising. We decline retainers when our instincts cause us to be concerned about our compatibility with a prospective client.
As a result of our reputation, and work with the New York State Bar Association, and other professional organizations, we have developed affiliation agreements with firms in Western New York and the NYC Metropolitan Area which enable us to provide our clients, efficiently and without extra costs for travel, representation throughout the entire State. These relationships have also been thoughtfully formed, the affiliated firms being selected carefully.
Flink Smith has also recently formalized an affiliation with one of the Capital District’s premier elder law and estate planning practices. This affiliation will allow the attorneys at Flink Smith to work together with our clients and our expert affiliate attorneys in this rapidly growing and changing practice area to assure the best possible representation for our clients in complex estate planning and elder law matters.
We believe the practice of law can be a powerful tool for our clients’ lives and businesses. In instances of simple tasks and transactions, smooth, prompt delivery of service is a benchmark of our firm. In more complex situations, greater thought is applied, to assure an intelligent approach, with understanding of the forces of human nature, and compassion. In both types of matters, the product is the same: excellent results with unparalleled service.
